So the first time we went to San Francisco we did a lot of the normal touristy things, but this second time around I really wanted to enjoy the views of this breathtaking city. We found some great little hikes that might mix up your visit next time you go and give you that little work out you want when you are traveling!
Hike #1: Bernal Heights
A friend of mine lived in this neighborhood the first time we visited but we didn’t have time to do the hike, but when we came back this summer it was high on our to-do list. This hike is just outside the downtown area and you can either walk all the way up it or drive up the road a little way and hike a fraction of it. This trail is all on a road unless you like to go off trail a little bit like we did, but it offers stunning views of the city and you get to have a little bit of your childhood as well with a swing at the top. The best part, it is completely free!
Hike #2: Lands End
Wanting to get stunning views of the bay and the bridge but not be surrounded by all the tourists at the pier, this hike is perfect for you then. This little bit of a more strenuous hike, yes wear more than just normal shoes, winds and curves across the bay with views around every corner. You can make the hike as long or as short as you want which is what I love out it because you do have other things to do in this amazing city. Make sure you get there early or late to get parking because it does fill up quickly, but thankfully there is some great free street parking a little ways away.
Hike #3: Marshall’s Beach
This hike is more of a hidden gem than anything. Located a little bit closer to the downtown area, this secluded hike will give you stunning views of the bay without all those pesky crowds. Fair warning, if you go in the summer it is sometimes known as the topless beach, but hopefully, you will get lucky to know to enjoy those types of views. Also, make sure you look at the tide schedule before you go as well just because it is right up against the water you don’t want to be there during high tide. The parking lot I linked is free, but make sure you lock your car and take out all valuables.
This beautiful city is more than just the pier and Alcatraz, the natural beauty of the California coast is what draws me to it and I hope you can check out these hikes and experience them as well.
